Gregory Lloyd Lalor
Gregory Lloyd Lalor was born in Echuca on 25 September, 1949.
He grew up having lots of fun with his brother Phil and they remain
close today.
Phil and Greg would play cricket and football together for hours,
especially on the old Tatura golf course opposite the Martin street
house. They also taught themselves how to play golf (not very well)
with a couple of old left handed clubs the next door neighbour gave
them. Phil is right handed.
Another notable activity was raiding bird nests to build up Phil’s egg
collection. They used to ride their bikes, some days for many miles
looking for likely nests. Because Greg was older and a lot taller than
Phil in those days Greg used to climb the big trees.
On some Saturdays they would go with Dad and his mate “Charcoal” removing trees that had fallen across
fences on the local farms, which they cut up and loaded into Charcoal’s ute and trailer for fire wood.
Greg finished high school in 1967 at Shepparton High School and joined the Department of Supply in
Melbourne on 2 Jan 1968. In 1969 Greg moved to Canberra where he still lives.
In the first few years in Canberra Greg played Aussie Rules for a team called South Woden (which eventually
became Tuggeranong) in the second division of the local competition. He played cricket for Western Districts
Cricket Club in lower grades for many years, as a bowler. He also played golf, (still not very well) and
basketball and he and Susanne would spend many hours coaching and refereeing junior and senior basketball
games. He was the Treasurer for the North Canberra Basketball Association for some years until it disbanded
and initiated the running of an annual basketball “carnival”, which later developed into the “Canberra Classic”.
He married Susanne in April 1974 and together they had 5 children Gavin, Charlene, Stephanie, Raelene and
Natalie.

In his working life Greg became involved (in 1986) in the Defence major projects acquisition program. This
involved tender evaluations and contract negotiations for equipment such as, Blackhawk Helicopters, PC9
Trainer Aircraft, Air Traffic Control Radars, F111 Upgrades,P3 Aircraft ESM. During the period 1987 to
1988 Greg visited Italy, England, France, Israel, and the USA on Defence business. From Aug 1990-Aug
1994 the family lived in California USA while Greg was on a project posting.

During the period in the USA Greg
played cricket for the British and
Dominion Cricket Club, and as the
name suggests, there were players
from around the globe playing. He
maintains that he managed to finally
play international cricket as there were
teams representing India, Pakistan and
the West Indies in the competition.
Because the skill levels were not high
in the B&D team he eventually
became captain of the team for 2
years and an opening batsman who
managed to score more runs in that
position than his usual #11. Gavin also
played for the team.
In Feb 1994 the long work hours, takeaway meals, cigarettes,
and six packs of coca cola caught up with him and resulted in a
double by-pass operation. Shortly after this operation the family
returned to Australia.
Greg retired from the Department of Defence as a Commercial Manager for Acquisition Projects in
September 2004. He has subsequently returned to the workforce on several temporary short term jobs and
then retired again.
Greg has a love of most music but especially “country” music.
Greg would watch football and cricket on television 24 hours a day if he could stay awake! So inthe
middle of 2005 Greg went to an ACT Cricket Umpires course, managed to pass the test at the second
attempt, and umpired during the 05/06 season. At the ACT Cricket Association Awards night in March
06 Greg was presented with the Brian Lawrence “Most Outstanding First Year Umpire” award. Greg
says it perhaps should say “Standing Out There Most Award!
