David was born in Canberra on 1 April 1949 (shortly after his elder twin brother John - they are not identical) and has lived there all his life.

Raised in the northern Canberra suburb of Ainslie the twins enjoyed an adventurous upbringing with their father Cavan (Cav) introducing them to the ‘bush’ at an early age.  They would spend many weekends’ rabbit trapping, ferreting, kangaroo shooting and fishing as well as wood carting to keep the home fires burning. The boys would often accompany their father on work camps when he was a foreman with the Works Department Roads and Bridges Division. Later on, a common sight around building sites on weekends and school holidays was the twins with claw hammer and nail bag in tow helping their father and uncles complete mile after mile of paling fences.

David married Sue in 1970 and they have two children Justin (married to Shae) and Benita who are now actively pursuing their careers following completion of their tertiary studies.  Sue spent the early years of her life on a farm at NAAS near Tharwa then moved to the Canberra suburb of Ainslie in the late fifties. Cav and Sue’s father became friends and Sue’s brothers’ played junior and senior footy at Ainslie as did David and John). Although they knew each other through this association David and Sue didn’t become ‘connected’ until 1968.

Australian Rules Football had a strong influence on David’s physical pursuits from an early age. Later in his teenage years he became interested in car racing and water skiing.

David has had a long association with the Ainslie Football Club and its Licensed Club, the Ainslie Football and Social Club. He played both junior and senior football for the club over a period of twenty years and represented the ACT at the under 19 level. He also successfully coached at the senior level (u19’s) for four years and has been President of both the Football and Social Clubs and is a Life Member of both entities.

Educated in both the Catholic and Public School systems David joined the Federal Public Service in the mid sixties and spent 35 years working in various Government Departments, including National Development, Urban and Regional Development, Home Affairs and Environment, Sport and Tourism. His work in Tourism involved both domestic and international tourism promotion. On the international front he project managed Australia’s participation in three international Expositions, Osaka (Japan) 1990, Seville (Spain) 1992 and Taejon (South Korea) 1993. He also worked as an Adviser to the Federal Tourism Minister in the year leading up to the 2000 federal elections.  His public service career ended with a four year stint at the Australian Institute of Sport where he managed the Olympic Athlete Program aimed at preparing Australian athletes in the lead up to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

In June 2000 David opted for a change of lifestyle and worked for four years on his brother-in-law’s expansive beef cattle properties at Tharwa (ACT) and Yaouk (NSW). Although retired since 2004 David remains active as a Director of the Ainslie Football and Social Club and is currently President of ClubsACT representing the interests of licensed clubs in Canberra.  Other interests include following the fortunes of his family, playing golf, fishing and cars and gardening.
