Cavan
(Cav) Madden LALOR
During the WWII Cavan was conscripted to work as a carpenter involved in building US bases in northern Australia.
Cavan left Simmie and Co to work for the government, he was a foreman on Road and Bridges then went fencing with his partners Claude Butcher and later with Perce & brother-in-law Aleck Bourke (Kate's brother).
Cav gave the fencing game away in his late 60's and worked until his mid seventies as a groundsman at the Canberra Racecourse.
Cav started playing Australian rules football with the Ainslie Football Club in 1927 (he was captain in 1935) and also played for a couple of other ACT clubs during his career which ended in 1939 with a premiership (the first for the club) at the Queanbeyan (NSW) Tigers Club - he was always a Richmond supporter. He also represented the ACT at an Australian Football Carnival during this time.

Thanks to David Lalor for this picture. David says "The photo was probably taken at Old Parliament House or the War Memorial - looks like the former to me. Uncle Dud was a foreman for the company - hence the shirt and tie - and he 'recruited' his two brothers (Alf and Cav) from Healesville to come and work in Canberra. Perce did not come until some time later."
